How to Search Canyon County Court Records

Most public Canyon County court records sit in the Idaho iCourt Portal, the statewide case-search tool run by the Idaho Supreme Court. The same data is mirrored at the Idaho Odyssey portal, which is the Tyler Technologies system behind iCourt. Both cover Canyon County District Court and Magistrate Division cases that are public under Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32. The Idaho Courts site directs the public to the iCourt Portal for general case information.

Have a strong identifier ready before you start. The Canyon County Warrants Unit says a name lookup needs first name, last name, and date of birth. A case number or a citation number returns the cleanest result. If you only have a name, narrow the location filter to Canyon County or the Third Judicial District. The portal also has a Search Hearings tab for date and courtroom lookups and a Make Payments tab for traffic and fine payments.

The screenshot below shows the Idaho Odyssey portal that powers Canyon County case lookups. The Idaho Odyssey public portal uses the same Tyler layout as other Idaho counties, so a search built for Canyon County also works for Ada or Owyhee cases. Public users land on the Smart Search tab by default.

Each step below moves a user from the statewide search to a paper or audio copy from the Canyon County Clerk.

  1. Open the Idaho iCourt Portal at mycourts.idaho.gov and pick the Smart Search tab for cases or Search Hearings for a docket date.
  2. Set the Location filter to Canyon County or the Third Judicial District so the search does not pull cases from the rest of the state.
  3. Use the strongest identifier first. Type an exact case number or citation number when you have one. For a name search, enter first name, last name, and date of birth.
  4. Open the public case summary and scroll to the Register of Actions to read the filings, hearings, orders, and any warrant entry.
  5. For a hearing date, courtroom, or judge, switch to the Search Hearings tab and use a date range rather than the case search.
  6. If you need the actual document, file the Canyon County Court Records Request form with the case number, parties, document name, and filing date.
  7. Visit the free iCourt kiosk at the Court Assistance Office in the Canyon County Courthouse for archived files. Archived records can be read at the kiosk but cannot be printed there.
  8. Pay the Clerk's copy fees once the office calculates them, then pick up your copies, get them by email, or have them mailed.

For older or high-profile matters, the Idaho Supreme Court posts heavy-traffic files on its Cases of Interest page. The screenshot below points to that resource.

That page is a useful first stop for any Canyon County court record tied to a major statewide case. Most everyday lookups still belong on the iCourt Portal.

The Idaho eFile and Serve system, shown below, is the upload side of the same Tyler platform that lawyers and self-represented parties use to file new pleadings into Canyon County cases.

Types of Canyon County Court Records

Canyon County court records cover every case that flows through the Third Judicial District trial courts in Caldwell. The District Court handles felony cases and civil suits over $10,000. The Magistrate Division handles traffic, misdemeanors, small claims, family law, probate, juvenile, and lower-dollar civil work. Each case type produces its own paper trail and shows up in the iCourt Portal under a matching case category.

Some files are wide open. Others have layers of redaction or are kept off the public portal by court rule. The list below sums up the main record types and where each one is heard.

  • Civil court records: complaints, answers, motions, affidavits, orders, judgments, garnishments, and liens, with District Court hearing the higher-dollar cases.
  • Criminal court records: charging documents, warrants, bond orders, pleas, sentencing orders, and probation terms, split between magistrate first appearances and District Court trials.
  • Family law records: divorce, custody, child support, paternity, modifications, and civil protection orders, all heard in the Magistrate Division.
  • Probate and guardianship records: wills, estates, conservatorships, accountings, and orders appointing personal representatives in the Magistrate Division.
  • Traffic and infraction records: citations, charges, pleas, dispositions, fines, and balances handled in the Magistrate Division.
  • Small claims and eviction records: small-dollar civil claims, landlord-tenant complaints, hearing outcomes, and judgments in the Magistrate Division.
  • Juvenile and mental health records: cases heard in the Magistrate Division but kept under tight access rules by statute.

Note: Jail roster charges and current arrests data are not always the same as the final charges the Prosecuting Attorney files, so check Canyon County court records on the iCourt Portal for current case status.

Public Access Laws for Canyon County Court Records

Idaho has two layers of public access law. The Idaho Public Records Act in Title 74, Chapter 1 covers public agency records in general. Court records have their own track. Idaho Courts says access to state court records is governed by Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32, which is set by the Idaho Supreme Court. Court records and proceedings are open to the public by and large, but ICAR 32 also protects privacy, safety, proprietary information, and the work of the judiciary.

The Public Records Act still matters for non-court Canyon County records and for the framework everyone reads first. Idaho Code 74-101 sets the broad definitions for public records. Idaho Code 74-102 creates the right to examine and copy public records unless an exemption applies. Canyon County cites subsection (10) of that statute when a request runs past 100 pages or needs more than two hours of staff labor. In those cases the County may ask for payment up front.

Agencies do not get to sit on a request. Idaho Code 74-103 says most custodians have three working days to provide records, deny the request, or refer it to a custodian judge. If the office needs more time, it must give notice within ten working days. Idaho Code 74-104 then steps back from court records and recognizes that the judiciary controls judicial files through its own rules. ICAR 32 is the rule that fills that space and sets the day-to-day Canyon County court records rules.

Note: Canyon County's court records request form requires a photo ID for any record exempt from public disclosure under ICAR 32.

Sealed and Restricted Court Records

Not every Canyon County court record is open. Juvenile cases, child protection files, adoption records, mental health proceedings, pre-sentence investigation reports, and some sealed criminal records sit behind statutory or court-rule walls. Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account numbers, and similar personal identifiers are redacted out of public filings as a matter of course. Active law enforcement investigations may also be held back under Idaho Code 74-106, even when the underlying court file is later opened.

Idaho's path to relief is narrow but real. Idaho Code 19-2604 lets a court dismiss or discharge a case after a successful deferred judgment or probation, which can change how the conviction appears in Canyon County court records. Idaho Code 20-525 covers the sealing of juvenile records, and once a juvenile file is sealed the public should not see it. Idaho Code 16-1626 shields child protection records, so abuse and neglect filings are off limits to the general public.

Idaho does not have a broad automatic adult expungement law. A person who wants access to a sealed Canyon County court record must show a lawful basis and may need a court order. The court records request form in Canyon County is built for this and asks for photo ID and a clear statement of the request.
